SEASON 4: EPISODE 16: WHO ARE YOU?
In the episode, bodies switched, Faith and Buffy brawl--
each punch blasting into the superhero abdomen of the young
woman who threw it—the same knuckle blood as when
she hits the mirror—except she can throw more (countless more)
before it shatters. Years since I’ve hit my sister like that,
but I’ll admit I did it. I understand the impulse.
This is what it’s like when you know only a little of who you are:
how you can find yourself in every single eye you black,
in each dislocated jaw. I know what it’s like to want,
for the sake of inquiry—does this one hurt?—to knock
every part all askew, and to want forgiveness, too. When twinned,
it is always your own body pushed down the stairs,
always you at the top, rage settling into horror,
as the other you lays betrayed against the first corner landing--
always your sprained wrist, you can feel the knotted head,
then you calling out for mom, who will drop whatever
she is holding and come to see who’s hurt. If your sister is frantic
—a glance will tell—you always lie for yourself: I fell.
